Madam Vice President,

Ukraine remains deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Eritrea and the absence of meaningful cooperation with international human rights mechanisms.

Reports continue to indicate persistent and systemic human rights violations, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, restrictions on fundamental freedoms, sexual and gender-based violence.

We remain particularly concerned by the erosion of the rule of law and the continued militarization of society, including through the system of indefinite national service, which affects access to education, employment, freedom of movement, family life, and continues to drive displacement.

Ukraine regrets Eritrea’s continued attempts to undermine international scrutiny instead of engaging constructively with the Human Rights Council and implementing its recommendations. We strongly condemn Eritrea’s continued alignment with states responsible for grave violations of international law, including its support for the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which further undermines international peace and security.

We believe that continued monitoring and accountability remain essential, particularly where violations stem from political choices rather than capacity constraints.
