On December 12 – 16, 2016 the Fifth Review Conference of the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which May Be Deemed to Be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects (CCW) takes place in Geneva.
During the event its participants are engaged in the review of the effectiveness of the CCW’s provisions and its additional Protocols, the level of their implementation by Member States, as well as discussing relevant initiatives and proposals of participants of the forum in the context of finding ways to ensure the universalization and strengthening of the Convention.
The delegation of Ukraine, which takes part in the mentioned event, in particular, emphasized on the fundamental role of the mentioned international instrument in the sphere of reducing the negative effects of the use of inhumane weapons, stressed on the appropriateness of considering the possibility of developing a separate document within the CCW that would prohibit the use of improvised explosive devices, informed about the international cooperation in implementing the CCW at national level and, drawing attention to the problem of emergence in Ukraine of new areas contaminated by explosive remnants of war (ERW) as the result of Russian aggression, appealed to the international community to continue providing effective assistance to our country in disposing of ERW.
