07 December 2016 18:27

On December 5 - 8, 2016 the 107th session of the Council of International Organization for Migration, celebrating nowadays its 65th anniversary, is taking place in Geneva. Representatives of the member-states, observers, international organizations (UNHCR, African Union, ILO, WHO, World Bank, ICRC and others), including NGO’s, attend the event.

Participants are discussing the migration processes, achievements of the countries in addressing the unprecedented number of displaced persons in the world, the program of activities of the Organization and its role in overcoming the consequences of the modern migration crises.

Addressing the event the IOM Director General William Swing and the President of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson, in particular, highlighted the significant deterioration of the situation with the forced displacement of people in the world. However, they positively noted the intensification of international efforts to develop the global tools to tackle the problems of refugees and migrants.

Permanent Representative of Ukraine, Ambassador Y.Klymenko in his statement during the general debate on December 7, 2016 drew attention to the main reason that worsens humanitarian situation in the country - namely the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. There were positively commended the IOM activities in our country and support of the international partners in addressing social challenges; participants were informed about the steps undertaken by the Ukrainian authorities to address the problems of displaced persons. The initiatives of the Ukrainian side, delivered at the UN Summit on refugees and migrants in New York in September this year, particularly on the necessity of establishment of an international mechanism of responsibility of states that violate international law and fundamental freedoms forcing civilians to leave their homes, together with an international binding framework to protect the rights of internally displaced persons, were also highlighted.
