On October 24, 2016 the 135th Assembly of the IPU - one of the oldest and universal international parliamentary organizations in the world - was launched. Assembly’s work will continue until October 27, 2016.
It is attended by parliamentarians from more than 130 IPU member countries as well as representatives of a number of international, including non-governmental, organizations. Ukraine at the forum is represented by the parliamentary delegation led by its Head, the People's Deputy of Ukraine, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasyuk. The Ukrainian parliamentary delegation also includes People's Deputies of Ukraine Mariia Ionova, Ivan Krulko, Olena Sotnyk, Refat Chubarov and Ihor Popov.
Members of the Assembly during the general debates focus on discussing, first of all, the theme of human rights abuses as precursors of conflict: parliaments as early responders. On October 25, 2016 the Ukrainian side plans to deliver a speech at the general debates.
The parliamentary delegation of Ukraine takes part in the work of the Standing Committees of the Assembly on Peace and International Security, Democracy and Human Rights, Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade and on the United Nations Affairs as well as in the Forum of Young Parliamentarians and the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Considerable attention is paid by the delegation to the condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, occupation of Crimea and part of Donbas and the situation of human rights violations on the temporarily occupied territories.
The discussions should result in the adoption, among others, of resolution titled "The freedom of women to participate in political processes fully, safely and without interference: building partnerships between men and women to achieve this objective".
