In the framework of commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster the round table "Lessons of international cooperation efforts for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Chornobyl affected regions" took place in the UN Office at Geneva. In his speech Yurii Klymenko, Permanent Representative of Ukraine, highlighted the measures being taken by the Government of Ukraine to overcome the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster and stressed the importance of taking into account the experience in this field gained by Ukraine, especially in the framework of development of the UN Chornobyl agenda beyond 2016. The Ukrainian side appealed to the donor community to continue providing appropriate support, especially considering the need for our State to further overcome new security challenges.
Representatives of international organizations and UN Member States stressed on the importance of the continuity of coordinated activities of the entire world community to mitigate the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster and to prevent similar tragedies in the future. It was emphasized on the need to bear in mind the Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030 as the benchmark in the relevant activities.
