On 4-8 August 2014 in Geneva the annual Meeting of Experts of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) takes place.

The main goal of the Meeting is to discuss issues related to strengthening of the Convention and deepening international cooperation in order to use the results of biological researches for peaceful purposes and provide technical assistance to States Parties to the Convention in identifying and combating pandemic threats.

Y.Klymenko, Head of the Delegation of Ukraine, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva in his speech at the forum stressed the important role played by the BWC in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, called for comprehensive strengthening of the BWC regime, including through further universalization of the Convention, improving the mechanism of confidence-building, strengthening monitoring and evaluation of research and biotechnology, enhanced international collaboration. He also drew attention to the achievements of Ukraine in the national implementation of the Convention, in particular the approval of the Concept of the State Programme on Biosafety and Biosecurity for 2012-2015.
