Meeting of Experts of States Parties to the APMBC takes place in Geneva
23 May 2019 21:56

On May 22 – 24, 2019, the Meeting of Experts of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (APMBC) takes place in Geneva.

During the event its participants discuss issues related to the universalization and implementation of the Convention at national level, in particular those provisions of the document, which stipulate the destruction of stockpiled anti-personnel mines, clearance of mined areas and assistance to victims of these weapons. Delegates are hearing relevant reports of the four Committees of the Convention’s Secretariat, as well as are exchanging relevant information on progress in achieving the goals set out by the «Maputo Action Plan» of June 27, 2014, including in the context of preparation for the Fourth APMBC Review Conference (November 25 – 29, 2019, Oslo).

The Permanent Representative of Ukraine in Geneva Y.Klymenko informed the participants of the Meeting about the ongoing work carried out by our country on the implementation of the APMBC. He drew attention to the regular shelling of Ukrainian soil by the Russian Federation with the use of weaponry, prohibited by the Minsk Agreements, leaving behind hundreds of explosive remnants of war. Permanent Representative also called upon the international community to urge Russia to cease its hostilities against Ukraine, including those with active use of anti-personal mines, which cause high casualties among the civilian population.
