The Human Rights Council on the last day of its 29th session on July 3, 2015 approved the draft resolution "Cooperation and Assistance to Ukraine in the Field of Human Rights" submitted by the delegation of Ukraine under agenda item 10 "Technical Assistance".
50 UN Member States from all regions of the world co-sponsored the resolution: in addition to Ukraine, they were all 28 EU Member States; Albania; Andorra; Australia; Canada; Côte d'Ivoire; Georgia; Iceland; Israel; Japan; Liechtenstein; Montenegro; New Zealand; Norway; Panama; Republic of Macedonia; Republic of Moldova; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Sierra Leone; Switzerland; Turkey; the United States.
The main objective of the resolution is presentations to the Council by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights of the reports prepared by his Office based on the findings of the Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine that has been working in our country since March 2014 at the invitation of Ukrainian Government. Over the next three HRC sessions as well as in the intersessional period in December this year, quarterly reports on the situation of human rights in Ukraine, including on the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Sevastopol and in the east of the country, will be the subject of stand-alone discussions by members and observers of the Council.
At the request of the Russian delegation the resolution was put to a vote and adopted with the following results: 21 "in favor", 6 "against" (Bolivia, China, Cuba, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela), 20 "abstained".
Despite active Russia’s resistance to the adoption of the resolution, the voting results testified to the growing awareness of the international community regarding the aggressive policy of RF towards our country as well as to the support for Ukraine in the international arena.
