14 May 2013 within the framework of special meeting of the WTO General Council, the candidate from Brazil, Amb. Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, Permanent representative of Brazil to the WTO and other economic international organizations in Geneva, was appointed to the post of WTO Director-General.
The candidate from Brazil was supported by the overwhelming majority of member-states during three rounds of the election process, which were conducted from the 2-rst of April till 7-th of May 2013. The election process was held by "Troika" (Chair of the General Council, Chair of the Dispute Settlement Body and Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body) in confidential and reciprocal manner. Nine candidates from Mexico, Korea, Indonesia, Brazil, Jordan, Kenya, New-Zealand, Costa-Rika and Ghana took part in the election process.
Amb. Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo would hold the post of the WTO Director-General for a period of 4 years starting 1 September 2013.
